Trick or Treat: Why Candies Can Harm Your Skin

Halloween is almost here! This means candies, candies, and more candies! The kiddos are going to bring in loads of treats and parents, we all know that you’re going to sneak in and grab a few for you when they’re not looking. But let us tell you why maybe you might want to skip those sweets. Candies are unforgiving to the waistline and it also can be harmful to your skin!

When you eat refined sugar or simple carbohydrates, your insulin levels spike up which then creates a burst of inflammation in the body. This inflammation then produces enzymes that break down collagen and elastin resulting in wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin! Yikes! So how do you resist the temptation?

1. Buy the candies late: Buy candies for trick or treaters closer to Halloween. Don’t store them in your pantry. The more you see them, the more you get used to them being there and the more likely you will open the bag and take some. Sometimes, buying late can even get you a deal. Stores usually put them on sale when it gets closer to Halloween.
2. Drink Water: I know it seems odd but drinking lots of water and eating a proper meal the night of Halloween will help you feel full and the less likely you will to grab a few chocolate bars to satisfy your craving.
3. Be mindful of Substitutes: We don’t want to be the party pooper house that gets candies that are healthy and no fun. But you can always mix better, healthier candies with the more traditional Halloween treats. Something healthier is always better than none.
4. Give away the Candies: Make sure you give away all the candies in your home that night. If you have kids that come with their trick or treat bags, just give them a few and take leftover candies to your workplace or give them away to the less fortunate. It’s a win-win. No candies means no temptations.
